Book Review : This book is primarily designed for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of Civil Engineering. Besides, the book would also be useful to the practicing engineers and designers. The tremendous growth of both passenger and traffic in the country in the recent years have been rightly compared to the arteries of a human being and their importance in the social and economic development of India cannot be overemphasized. Author undertook the task of bringing out a comprehensive text on the subject incorporating the latest information and design.

The book is divided into the following six parts:

Part I – Covers introduction, highway plans, economics, administration, finance and traffic engineering. Highway location including hill roads, project preparation, drainage and geometric design are dealt with in

Part II – The geometric standards laid down by the Indian Roads Congress have been mainly incorporated.

Part III – Includes Highway soil classification and earthwork. Pavement types and their material requirements and construction methods are covered in

Part IV – The subject of soil-stabilized roads have been given a comprehensive treatment to encourage the use of local materials for the low-cost roads. Equipment needed for construction has been mentioned.

Part V – Deals with pavement design. General considerations and factors involved in the design of both flexible and rigid pavements are discussed in Chapter 19. Latest design methods for flexible and rigid pavements, including airfield pavements are treated in chapter 20 and 21.

Part VI – Covers highway distress, pavement evaluation and rehabilitation (strengthening) and maintenance of roads. The information will be of great importance to the designers and the practicing engineers.
